Coloradans’ concerns about public safety are growing and for good reason. Former District Attorneys George Brauchler and Mitch Morrissey recently pointed out startling increases in crime from 2011-2020: a 35% jump in violent crime, and a historic rise in property crimes.
While marijuana is not solely responsible for the crime wave, evidence suggests it has played a role. A 2019 study of Colorado medical and recreational dispensaries found that both types of marijuana storefronts were associated with statistically significant increases in rates of neighborhood crime and disorder.
